Yan Yan MAK was born in Hong Kong . She graduated from the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1998.From 1993 onwards,while still a film student, she had worked for the film industry as a continuity girl, assistant director, production manager, art director and wardrobe designer. Her graduation short film Snapshots won the Distinguish Award at the IFVA(International Short Film & Video Awards) of Hong Kong in 1998 and was invited to numerous international student film festivals. After directing various short dramas for RTHK, the Hong Kong government ' s radio and television station, she decided to form her own production company , Hua Lian Zhan Dui Production(Lotus Film), to make her own films. A believer in the school of guerrilla and low-budget filmmaking, Mak embarked on a daring personal mission to western China to make her first independent feature using a very limited budget, a small crew and all non-actors. The result is Gege(Brother), a story about a Hong Kong young man searing for his lost brother and his past in a remote part of Qinghai , China . Gege won the FIPRESCI Award at the 25 th Hong Kong International Film Festival, the POVEGLIA Award at the International Week of Film Critics of the 58 th Venice Film Festive, the Woosuk Award at Jeonju International Film Festival 2001, as well as Ecumenical Jury Prize at the International Film Festival Bratislava in 2001 and Fribourg International Film Festival 2001.
