ANT PATHS

ANT PATHS
Scurrying black skeletons with acrid
odours, you ran hither, thither
across my four-year-old dreams.
In my sandaled feet of gigantic power
I stalked our backyard dust path
and came across your paths too.
Saw you so earnest in endeavours
back and forth in your roadways
from the seething annular nest.
So I stopped where your trail
intersected mine. Observed you
burdened with leaf fragments,
naked seeds, a struggling captive
bee. Suddenly I stamped my sandal
perhaps to see who would be first
to draw aside from our paths. It was me.

AMAZING
I’ve survived until now,
when you look about,
I mean, amazing!
As usual there’s wars
in one gulf or another.
Afghanistan’s on fire
Lebanon’s mostly ash
another inundation takes
a thousand or a thousand thousand
somewhere in a delta, lowlands,
islands just above salt shallows.
Amazing I’m alive ’til now,
like a frog that’s dived in a pool
with a sound like water.
