MaoMusic in Cultural Revolution Comics
It is not uncommon to find characters in these comic books singing Mao’s praise. In one comic, published in 1973 and named after Korean War model soldier Luo Shengjiao 罗盛教 (1931–52), the soldiers are seen singing two familiar songs under the blazing sun: “Red Is the East” and “The Three Main Rules of Discipline and the Eight Points for Attention” (ill. 6.1). Another comic shows a scene where the villagers are all sitting around a small TV set, watching the revolutionary opera Song of the Dragon River together (ill. 6.2).
