Lü Zhong (吕中) stars as Cixi
Lü Zhong is an actress at the Beijing People’s Art Theatre (Beijing renmin yishu juyuan 北京人民艺术剧院). During her more than fourty years of acting, she has mainly played the part of mothers in various films, TV dramas, and theatre productions.
Her most memorable performances include:

  • In the film “Autumn Home” (Gu yuan qiu se 故园秋色) she portrayed the mother of the revolutionary Tao Zhu 陶铸
  • In the film “Blue Dragon” (Lan fengzheng 蓝风筝) she played the mother
  • In the TV drama “Deng Yingchao and her mother” (Deng Yingchao he ta de mama 邓颖超和她的妈妈) she was cast as Deng Yingchao’s mother
  • In the TV drama “Mother” (Muqin 母亲) she had the lead role: the mother
  • In the TV drama “Whom do you defend in court?” (Ni wei shei bianhu 你为谁辩护?) she played the part of the female lawyer
For her performance in the TV drama “Deng Yingchao and her mother” (邓颖超和她的妈妈) she was awarded the 16th Flying Apsaras prize for best actress in a lead role (di shiliu jie feitian jiang zui jia nü zhujiao 第十六届飞天奖最佳女主角).

Wang Bing (王冰) stars as Li Hongzhang
Wang Bing was formerly an actor at the Chinese Youth Art Theatre (Zhongguo qingnian yishu juyuan 中国青年艺术剧院). Now over seventy years of age, he has spent most of his career as an actor on stage.
His most memorable performances include:

  • In “The Marriage of Figaro” (Feijialuo de hunyin 费加罗的婚姻) he played the lead
  • In the theatre play “Pawel Kortschagin” (Baoer Kechajin 保尔-柯察金) – the Chinese adaptation of the Russian autobiographical social novel “How the steel was hardened” by N. A. Ostrovskij (1904-1936) – he had the lead part
  • In the TV drama “Empress Wu Zetian” (Wu Zetian 武则天) he played the part of Wu Zetian’s chancellor, Di Renjie 狄仁杰)
  • In the film “The Last Nobleman” (Zuihou de guizu 最后的贵族) he starred as the Li family’s father

Sun Chun (孙淳) stars as Yuan Shikai
In 1982, Sun Chun completed his studies at the Shanghai Theatre Academy (Shanghai xiju xueyuan 上海戏剧学院). Since then he has been working for TV and cinema studios. On screen, he often played the part of the “cityman” (Dushi xingshi 都市形象) auf der Leinwand.
His most memorable performances include:

  • In the Film “Hero Fighting the Drugs” (Ji du yingxiong 缉毒英雄) he starred in a supporting role. This performance earned him the Golden Eagle for best actor in a supporting role at the TV Festival of the Masses (Dazhong dianshijie jinying jiang zui jia nan peijiao 大众电视节金鹰奖最佳男配角) erhielt. In der Fernsehserie „Geschichte von Macao“ (澳门的故事) spielte er die Hauptrolle,
  • In the TV drama “A History of Macao” (Aomen de gushi 澳门的故事) he had the lead role. For this performance CCTV and the “China TV Weekly Magazine” nominated him the most popular actor of the year 2000.

Ma Shaohua (马少骅) stars as Sun Zhongshan
Ma Shaohua graduated from the Shanghai Theatre Academy. At the age of eight he had already started to train for the Beijing Opera. During his long career he has played more than one hundred different parts both on stage at the Beijing opera, in theatre productions as well as in films and TV dramas.
Amongst his performances he is best known for his portrayal of Sun Yatsen. He is also counted as one of the most popular actors to have played Sun Yatsen. According to the opinion of several members of staff at the Sun Yatsen Mausoleum, Ma resembles Sun most of all actors who have ever depicted Sun. Since 1984 he has portrayed Sun on many occasions. In fact, Ma stated in a CCTV interview in March 2003 that he does not only strive to resemble Sun as much as possible when he acts, but that he also tries to emulate Sun in real life.
His most memorable performances include:

  • In the film “Twelve Years through Wind and Rain” (Fengyu shiernian 风雨十二年) he starred as Sun Yatsen
  • In the TV drama “Zhang Daqian in Dunhuang” (Zhang Daqian zai Dunhuang 张大千在敦煌) he portrayed the painter Zhang Daqian
  • In the TV drama “Huang Xing 黄兴" he played the revolutionary Huang Xing
  • In the TV drama “The President of the People” (Pingmin da zhongtong 平民大总统) he starred as Sun Yatsen
  • In the TV drama “The Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty” (Han Wu dadi 汉武大帝) he portrayed the premier Dou Ying

Han Zaifen (韩再芬) stars as Shen Yuying
Han Zaifen came to fame as an actress at the Huangmei Opera (黄梅戏) – a local opera in Anhui province. She started studying Huangmei Opera at the age of twelve. At fourteen she acted on stage for the first time. With only sixteen she stared as the heroine in the Huangmei-Opera TV drama “Zheng Xiaojiao 郑小娇". For this performance she was later awarded the Golden Eagle at the TV Festival of the Masses (大众电视节金鹰奖).
She has further starred in:

  • The Huangmei-Opera TV drama “The Emperor’s Female Son-in-law” (Nü fu ma 女附马)
  • The Huangmei-Opera TV drama “Romance of a Fairy and a Peasant” (Tian xian pei 天仙配)
  • The Huangmei-Opera TV drama “The Peach Blossom Fan” (Tao hua shan 桃花扇)
  • The Huangmei-Opera TV drama “Romances of Businessmen from Anhui” (Hui shang qingyuan 徽商情缘)
  • The Huangmei-Opera TV drama “Meng Lijun” (Meng Lijun 孟丽君)
  • The Huangmei-Opera TV drama “Women of Anhui” (Huizhou nüren 徽州女人)
In 1999 she was awarded the Chinese Plum Blossom Prize (Meihua jiang 梅花奖) – the most prestigious national art prize.
