Liu Huaizheng (刘怀正)

Liu Huaizheng (刘怀正)
Liu Huaizheng, born in 1934 in Sichuan province, was role model actor of one of the most important military leaders within Chinese (Communist) history: Zhu De (朱德). After graduation from the Shanghai Theatre Academy in 1952, Liu started to work as an actor, director and scriptwriter. In 1978 he started to act the role of Zhu De, but only after performing the role of Zhu De in the movie “The crossing of the Dadu River” (Dadu he 大渡河) in 1980 did he achieve the role model position. Other movies in which he embodied Zhu De include:

  • “Romance in the Secluded Valley” (Yougu lian ge
  • “The Nanchang Uprising” (Nanchang qiyi
  • “Zhu De and Smedley” (Zhu De yu Shimotelai
  • “General Peng Dehuai” (Peng da jiangjun
  • “The Kunlun Column” (Weiwei Kunlun
  • “The Birth of New China” (Kaiguo Dadian
  • “Zhou Enlai“ (周恩来), 1991
Liu did not only physically resemble Zhu De, but also studied Zhu De’s behaviour, facial expressions and gestures. He experienced many difficulties in his career because he became heavily sick and had to take great effort to lose weight for fitting into his role. He died in February 1997 in a car accident, when he visited the US.
